Top Stories of The Week
1. Big Green Candles & Influencers
It's clear to me that more influencers and institutional folks are talking about HBAR and Hedera. Maybe it's a bullish take, or maybe it's a bearish take, but regardless: all eyes are on HBAR and we're entering a make or break stage. As I've said before, Hedera, Swirlds Labs, HBAR Foundation and Hashgraph Association have the "substance stuff" covered, they do it better than anyone else. It's up to the community to let loose and have some fun without getting too bogged down in the details. We are entering a new phase of the market where winners are determined not so much by substance, but hype and if any network deserves to hype itself, it's Hedera.
2. A New CBDC Testing on Mainnet
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is advancing a digital currency, the eCedi, aligning with global CBDC trends. The Cedi (see-dee) is the official currency of Ghana, used for all forms of financial transactions within the country. The eCedi aims to enhance financial inclusion, reduce reliance on cash, improve payment efficiency, and offer a secure digital currency alternative. Two wallet types will be introduced: hosted wallets for online use and hardware wallets for offline transactions. To further this initiative, the Bank of Ghana, in partnership with EMTECH, is hosting the "eCedi Hackathon.". Ultimately, we are now seeing "eCedi" on the Hedera mainnet and it's getting folks excited.
3. OneSpan, ProvenDB and Hedera
OneSpan is a company that provides security and e-signature solutions for digital transactions to over 50 of the worlds top banks and recently acquired ProvenDB, a company that utilizes Hedera Hashgraph technology. Patent US11689374B1 directly references how Hedera will be leveraged in this initiative and furthermore it's been confirmed that Hedera will be the default infrastructure for OneSpan's services. After the acquisition of ProvenDB, its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) has taken on the role of 'Enterprise Architect' at OneSpan.
4. Web3 ATL: DeRec & Rumours
Dr. Leemon Baird was at Web3 ALT this week giving a presentation on DeRec and it's exciting to see that initiative rolling forward. I share my thoughts on what DeRec will mean for Hedera, web3 and the world in general. Plus I touch on a few rumours that I find quite interesting...
5. Shayne at NYSE: What's Next?
HBAR Foundation CEO, Shayne, was presenting to hundreds of institutional investors at the NYSE touching upon the Hedera Stablecoin Studio service, Dropp and the international remittance PoCs. This was done at an event by The Tie which is like a bloomberg terminal for crypto. Additionally, when paired with the recent HBAR pump, the timing is curious that preceeding the volatility was Shayne's presentation. Very interesting...
6. How Hedera TPS is Calculated
An awesome new Hedera blog article was published recently that details exactly how TPS on Hedera is calculated and further cements the fact that only transactions submitted and paid for by external parties are included in the TPS count (this can't be stressed enough). I share my thoughts on the branding of the "Hedera Consensus Service" and why it's so bad and confusing. We also break down the math and all form an understanding of how exactly TPS is calculated... fascinating stuff!
7. Chainspect Adds Hedera to Leaderboard
In the battle of TPS and inflated figures, many in web3 flock to services like RealTPS and Chainspect where the fluff is filtered out and the real numbers are left to compare side by side. Chainspect is another great service to find the signal through the noise and they've added Hedera and display it's TPS alongside BSC, Solana, Cardano and other major networks.
8. A Sneak Peek at 5 Digit TPS
This week, I was sent a few videos showing 5 digit TPS on the Hedera mainnet (some at 15k, some at 30k) and I shared one of these on X. Usually, if this is a glitch that is made clear, but I did not receive any confirmation one way or another. It's also worth pointing out that on Metrika, these 5 digit figures were not recorded so it remains unconfirmed. But hey, we've got our first peak of what 5 digit TPS looks like!
9. Charles Hoskins & Midnight
I agree with Charles when he says "One of the biggest problems for Fortune 500 adoption is that you you have price spikes, you wake up and something suddenly is five times as expensive in a week. How do you get big Fortune 500 companies and everyday businesses to come and use your thing like a cloud product if you have no price predictability." but what I disagree with is his dismissal of Hedera. Recently, he's announced the launch of a new L2 called Midnight and I share my thoughts on this...
10. Reflecting on 100 Episodes
Every year, I spend over 350 hours working on this show and I wouldnt trade it for the world! For episode 100, I plan to recap the last 50 episodes as "a year in Hedera" so we can paint the full picture as we head into 2024. I also have some big plans for the show next year, special guests planned and a bunch more surprises, so tune in and we'll close this chapter to begin a new one! So grateful for all the supporters and listeners of the show : )
